What is the disease?
Ataxia is the medical name for loss of balance or impaired coordination of the limbs. In such a condition, it is possible to affect not only the arms and legs, but also to have difficulty speaking or moving the eyes.
The disease can be inherited or acquired. Congenital ataxia occurs over the years due to genetic causes. When ataxia is not hereditarily burdened, then we speak of an acquired condition.
It can occur for a number of reasons – stroke, multiple sclerosis, brain disease, cerebral palsy, trauma, radiation due to severe infection and other medical conditions.
Types of ataxia
In medicine, three main types of ataxia are described, according to the causes of the disease and the affected area.
Cerebellar ataxia causes disorders of the type described. As the name itself suggests, this case concerns health problems found in the cerebellum.
Sensory ataxia is the second type associated with spinal involvement. The manifestations of the disease are mainly due to reduced or completely impaired sensitivity in some parts of the body.
Vestibular ataxia , the manifestation of which is in the balance, ie. balance problems. The reason is disorders of the vestibular apparatus, which most often occur when the inner ear is damaged.
In summary, the manifestations of ataxia in all three species are broad-spectrum . In patients in a similar condition are described various complaints. The most common are vertigo, staggering, difficulty moving and coordinating the limbs, which interferes with the fine motor skills of the hands.
Often ataxia is a consequence of another disease, which is why its treatment is a priority. When, however, there are problems with the coordination of the limbs and a lack of balance, then a set of therapeutic methods and techniques come to the rescue. Gymnastics and various types of exercise, diet, herbal decoctions are among the most common.
Therapeutic gymnastics is probably the most common therapy for ataxia. It is performed under the guidance and with the help of physiotherapists. Specialists are the ones who can prepare an individual regimen, according to specific health problems.
The main goal is strengthening the muscles, when there is impaired limb coordination. In such cases, train for the back, waist and major muscle groups. Alternating physical activities to improve balance is appropriate. Walking on different surfaces is also recommended.
Doctors sometimes prescribe vibration therapy . It is applied to certain parts of the body in order to improve blood circulation and sensibility.
Physiotherapy has a positive effect when prescribed correctly and lasts long enough. Therapeutic gymnastics for ataxia, as for all other diseases, should be applied according to medical indications. The earlier therapy is started after diagnosis, the more certain the result can be.
This approach is very successful in different types of ataxia. The idea is to perform different functional tasks. According to their type, the aim is a positive effect on the motility of the movement, the general coordination and strengthening of the movements of the limbs.
These are a set of exercises that include proper breathing. The technique was invented by the actor Frederick Alexander more than 100 years ago. He himself lost his voice, then began research and created the healing practice that already bears his name.
In general, exercise helps to keep fit, physically, mentally and emotionally.
Alexander’s series of movements help to overcome low back and back pain, to improve the flexibility of the spine and muscles in this area. Proper posture and coordination depend on the correct connection between the head and the spine.
In fact this technique can be applied by everyone, whether or not they have health problems. Proper posture, breathing and movement are mandatory to improve tone.
This is a treatment approach that is recommended for children with health problems. In the form of such activities, they repeat certain movements, which turns the game into therapeutic gymnastics.
Another positive point is that it is easy to apply at home and abroad . The games are also suitable for movement in elderly patients. Simulation tasks can also be applied.
The purpose of this technique is to achieve greater control over involuntary functions. It is generally believed that we cannot influence the pulse, temperature, blood pressure and other functions of our body. However, it turns out that there is a way to realize, feel and to some extent normalize various functions .
Biofeedback is applied using equipment . This is how blood pressure is measured, pulse, temperature. Special sensors are attached to the skin to determine which effects, for example, speed up the heart rate or increase sweating.
When the therapist has information about the reasons for the increase in stress, certain emotions and conditions can be influenced. This is in many cases a useful therapy for ataxia.
Ayurveda is traditional Indian medicine that helps with various ailments and conditions. It mostly cures energy imbalances in the body, which are the root cause of many diseases . In Ayurveda, there are a number of healing procedures that are used to treat movement disorders.
Therefore, people suffering from various types of ataxia feel relief and share positive results. They are suitable for stroke, paralysis, lack of coordination and other problems.
PatraPotali world panchakizi – aims to sweat, which is achieved with herbs that are filled with warm cotton bags. This stimulates the skin and tissues to expel toxins from the body.
Kati Pitchu – this procedure uses healing oils , which lubricate the area around the waist. This is done with a cotton compress . The effect is to reduce muscle pain, the feeling of stiffness to improve motor activity.
Sandy Pitchu – similar therapy to the previous one, here the emphasis is on the joints. They are also lubricated with herbal oil. The procedure is analgesic and restorative.
In Ayurveda many herbal decoctions are used for treatment , various massages, herbal saunas, which strengthen the muscles and improve motor activity yoga is also helpful.
Some of the basic movements are successfully combined in physiotherapy of patients with similar problems. Many of the poses are suitable for releasing blockages in the body as they stimulate coordination.
This gymnastics is applicable for ataxia, because it is not forceful and when performing a certain asana there is smoothness and holding in position for up to a few minutes.
