Chronic alcoholism

Chronic alcoholism

Alcoholism – the silent killer

Chronic alcoholism is quite a common disease that is directly or indirectly associated with a high percentage of deaths. It is considered that the alcoholics in Europe are over 25 million, and the death of more than 3 million people in the world per year is due to alcohol.

Alcohol is a silent killer

This is because alcoholism leads to numerous diseases of various systems in the organism – the cardiovascular, brain, nervous, digestive, excretory and reproductive. The impact of alcohol is especially very harmful to the liver. Moreover, many of the heavy injuries and deaths happen in a drunk state, which is a permanent state for people suffering from alcoholism.

This condition is developing “quietly” over the years. The visible manifestations in the beginning are different for each person depending on the organism, the general condition and the sex. Generally, in men, the alcoholism is apparent after 8-10 years of abuse, and if not treated, it may lead to premature death. In younger people and women the period is about 5 years of alcohol abuse.

The causes of alcoholism lie both in the personal psychological features and in the surrounding environment, personal dramas or dissatisfaction, professional stress, etc. Heredity also plays a role in pedisposition to alcohol dependence. Because of this combination of causes, alcoholism affects both man and women in different social groups – homeless people, as well as people with high social status.

Very often the euphoria of alcohol is confused with creative inspiration and spiritual release, recharge, or a company is sought to share problems. The enchanted circle, however, is that the frequent use of alcohol increases anxiety, as well as it leads to depression. So, the addicted people understand very slowly that they have a problem and need help.

Very often people with such an addition even deny before themselves and others that they have a problem. That is why the so-called domestic alcoholism is so common – the person doesn’t drink in a company in order to “relax”, but he drinks at home, usually “alone with himself”. At a certain stage, besides the psychological dependence, a physical one also appears. In the absence of alcohol a trembling of hands occurs, the blood pressure increases, the pulse accelerates, cold sweat appears and so on.

Treatment with the help of Ayurveda

In excessive alcohol abuse, two of the vital energies of the person – Pitta and Vata – are increased. This disturbs the balance between them, as well as the equilibrium with Kapha – the third vital energy. In this equilibrium set by nature, the energies are in different proportions, and one or two of them are predominant to some extent. This determines the Dosha type. The diseases are caused upon deviations in this energetical proportion as it leads to insufficient function of the relevant organs, which depend on the Dosha that is out of balance.

The imbalance in Vata and Pitta in people suffering from alcoholism, creates fear, nervousness, anger, disturbed sleep and nightmares at night, depression. The symptoms depend on the degree of the imbalance of Vata-Pitta and on the main Dosha type of the person.

In fact, the Dosha type determines the therapy to a great extent. For example, upon quitting of alcohol, the condition of the patients with Vata type gets better with the use of turmeric, licorice and barberry. These are also useful for Pitta, but the licorice must be replaced with burdock. The herbs for Pitta are suitable also for Kapha, as the burdock must be replaced with ginger. Coctails may be prepared from the herbs as they can replace alcohol.

Of course, the Ayurvedic treatment is much more extensive and complex, and it must be appointed by a qualified specialist, by an Ayurveda specialist. The therapy includes:

  • Diet and herbs according to the required energy adjustments;
  • Detox, because the whole organism of the alcoholics is poisoned, especially the liver;
  • Meditation because alcoholism affects the emotions, will and thoughts;
  • Excersices and yoga asanas that strengthen the mental balance, but also have relaxing effect on specific organs and systems.
  • A number of various herbs, foods, oils for balance of the Doshas can be listed here.  But their specific combinations have to be made by an Ayurvedic specialist for each individual case. This is because the Ayurvedic treatment is always personal – according to the Dosha type and the energy deviations that are unique in every person.
